A Pastoral Letter on Faith, Inclusivity, and God's Transforming Love
From the Desk of His Beatitude, Patriarch Peter Charles Francis, Chief Metropolitan Archbishop, Primate of North America and Patriarch of Utrecht
"For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ." – 1 Corinthians 12:12
Beloved in Christ,
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As The Old National Catholic Church of America – Patriarchate of Utrecht, we stand on the firm foundation of apostolic succession, embracing the sacred traditions of the Church while responding to the needs of a world that longs for Christ's love and mercy. We are not a people bound by rigid conformity, but a community formed by the boundless grace of God, who calls all into His fold.
The Church as a Home for All
In a world that often seeks to divide, the Church must be a beacon of unity, love, and understanding. Christ did not turn away those who sought Him. He did not ask whether they fit a mold; He simply opened His arms and said, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). In this same spirit, we welcome all who seek refuge, healing, and spiritual nourishment.
Faith is not merely an inheritance but a living, breathing journey of discovery, built upon the sacred foundation of tradition and personal encounter with Christ. Some come to the Church with certainty, others with questions, and still others with wounds inflicted by misunderstanding or exclusion. To all, we say: You belong here. Whether you have been walking with Christ your entire life or are only now taking your first steps toward Him, you are a cherished part of this family. And as we welcome all, we also heed Christ's call to holiness, for His love not only embraces us—it transforms us.
Theology of Diversity: God's Handiwork in Many Forms
From the beginning, God designed a world rich in diversity—each person fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). As Saint Paul reminds us, in Christ, "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). This is not merely a poetic ideal; it is the very essence of the Gospel.
Yet too often, human fear seeks to build walls where Christ built bridges. But the Church, the Body of Christ, is made of many members, each with their own gifts, struggles, and stories. We must not only accept diversity—we must rejoice in it, for in our differences, we more fully reflect the image of God. Christ Himself, in taking on human flesh, embraced the fullness of our humanity, showing that salvation is for all peoples and cultures. The early Church, from Pentecost onward, broke down barriers, welcoming Gentiles and Jews alike, teaching that the love of God transcends divisions. We are called to continue this sacred work.
A Call to Faith and Openness
As Primate of the United States and Patriarch of Utrecht, I call upon all the faithful to open their hearts—not only to God but to one another. Let us challenge ourselves to embrace the stranger, to listen before we judge, and to extend grace in all things. Faith is not about having all the answers but about trusting the One who does.
If you have been searching for a spiritual home, know that The American National Catholic Church – Patriarchate of Utrecht welcomes you with open arms. If you have questions about your faith, bring them—we will explore them together. If you feel far from God, remember that He is never far from you. The love of Christ not only welcomes us but also calls us to deeper transformation, to holiness, and to a life shaped by the Gospel.
Let us walk this journey together, growing in faith, love, and understanding, as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. May we be bold in our witness, compassionate in our love, and steadfast in our commitment to the Gospel. May we go forth proclaiming the Good News with humility, boldness, and love, so that all may come to know the joy of His salvation.
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and give you peace.
